Nirvana a state of absolute and total bliss. Yet it seems that Nirvana songs and music lyrics are anything but that.
Indeed, when lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide and was found on the morning of April 8, 1994, he was quickly dubbed as the perfect example of Generation X. And perhaps, this was true. Some say that music reflects the times and nothing else depicts the torture, angst, fears and hopes of Generation X better than Nirvana song lyrics.
The foundation of Nirvana was formed when lead singer Kurt Cobain met Chris Novoselic through the punk group The Melvins. Other members have come and gone but Kurt and Chris were the core of Nirvana. As the lead songwriter, it is almost impossible to miss the torment and sorrow of Kurt Cobain as evidenced in the song lyrics of such songs as Blew (about entrapment), Paper Cuts (parent neglect), Breed (growing up trapped by middle-class America), and a lot more.
Some of the greatest Nirvana songs are Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies...
During its reign, Nirvana released four albums (excluding collections), namely Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide and In Utero (which was recorded in only 2 weeks!).
Of these album releases, it was Nevermind that put Nirvana into the mainstream, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and earning for them a reported $550 million. In this album too was the song Polly. And although the music lyrics of Polly were written as an anti-rape song, Kurt heard that it had been used as background music in a real gang-rape and was completely devastated by this news.
The lead singer is gone, the group disbanded, but the sound and music lyrics that was Nirvana lives on, even if only to remind us of the tribulations of a generation that (at least through Kurt Cobains eyes) is deeply troubled and full of angst. Do you agree?
